CBSE Affiliation

The School is already in the process of getting affiliation to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Sera Mey Monastery’s Abbot along with 3 of the School staff was to the Office of the District Commissioner (DC) for their approval and granting of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the onward submission of the application to the CBSE Board in New Delhi.  It is a long process but the School is given the hope that the affiliation will come to be granted by the Board in Delhi although it may take some time.

At the same time, the School is working hard to have the entire infrastructure, systems and other necessary requirements in place to upgrade the School from a Primary School to a Secondary School.  The School will surely be very ready to start class IX (in the first year and also then class X in the second year) as soon as the affiliation is granted.

At the same time, students completing class VIII or those attaining 15 years of age join as full time monks of the Sera Mey Monastery after the winter break – sometime in late February or early March of a given year.  Hereby starts their very serious study of the Five Classical Texts of Tibetan Buddhism (Nalanda Tradition).  Many strive very hard and come to earn the Geshe Degree (Doctorate in Buddhist Philosophy).

Sera Mery Monastery is proud of its more than 600 Geshes.  Many of these Geshes had begun their journey from this Sermey Thoesam School!

Staff Quarter Construction

Sermey Thoesam School is facing a big shortage of Staff Quarters as now most of the new teacher applicants are coming from outside of the Bylakuppe Settlement.  At the same time, the existing Staff Quarter was not built (built in the 1980s) as a proper Staff Quarter so it is lacking in quite a many aspects.  There is shortage of toilet, bath and proper kitchen in the Quarters.

The School Management is hoping to do at least 21 sets of Quarters on the available land belonging to the Sera Mey Monastery. The rough estimation is that it will cost around 447L rupees (approx. half million US dollars). The process will begin in the near future as accommodation shortage needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
